Then use painters tape to bring the edges of the break together, and let the repair sit overnight. Fill all three of the holes, clean up with a wet paper towel, and wrap the whole area in wax paper. Then take the dowel rod, coat it with the wood glue and drive it into each hole until it bottoms out, and then snap or break off the dowel rod (you want the end of the dowel rod to stick up a bit from the surface of the gunstock). I would then squeeze a big blob of wood glue (the yellowish colored stuff - white glue would work, but let's go 1st class here) onto a paper plate, and take a toothpick and apply a good layer of glue into the crack as far as you could without forcing the crack open. I would then half the distance between the two holes and drill a third hole about 1" deep. I would go up the stock until you reach the end of the crack, drop back about 1/2" and drill another hole about 1" deep. I would carefully drill a hole about 1/2" from the end of the buttstock approximately 1" deep. I would then get a hardwood dowel rod (you won't need more than about a 6" long piece) and find a sharp drill bit a tad bigger in diameter than the dowel rod. I would carefully remove the butt plate, then carefully chuck the rifle (bad side up) in a padded vice.
